Keith Haring was an American artist who became famous in the 1980s and is known for his unique drawings and paintings in the style of pop art and graffiti. Haring studied art in Pittsburgh and New York City and became known in the 1970s for showing his art in the New York subway and in public places around the city. His drawings of mostly simple and abstract shapes quickly became popular and Haring became an important representative of the street art movement. Many of his works, including drawings, paintings and sculptures included symbols such as hearts, rays and stylized figures that can be seen as a commentary on politics, sexuality our society. Keith Haring was very involved in social and political campaigns, especially in relation to HIV/AIDS. At the age of only 31, in 1990 he himself died from consequences of the disease. But his works are still known and loved today.
