BAFTA for ZDF Enterprises-coproduction "The Killing"

ZDF Enterprises - May 2011

The hit Danish-German coproduction "Forbrydelsen" / "The Killing" / "Kommissarin Lund - Das Verbrechen" was awarded a BAFTA in the category "International Series" in London on 22 May 2011. The successful DR TV / ZDF / ZDF Enterprises production topped its competitors "Mad Men," "Glee" and "Boardwalk Empire." The BAFTA awards number among the most highly prized distinctions of the film and TV industry in Europe and around the world.

The series was developed by the Danish broadcaster DR-TV (Piv Bernth and Sören Sveistrup) and produced with ZDF's "Hauptredaktion Reihen und Serien" (Klaus Bassiner, Wolfgang Feindt) in association with ZDF Enterprises' Office of Program Development (producer Peter Nadermann). In this outstanding miniseries, Inspector Sarah Lund (Sofie Gråbøl) investigates the brutal murder of a 19-year-old schoolgirl in Copenhagen. With over a thousand minutes of narrative time, during which the case unfolds in 20 consecutive days, the format has set new dramaturgical standards. ZDF Enterprises handles the international sales.

After two nominations for International Emmys in the categories "Best Series" and "Best Female Lead" in 2008, this award now adds to the international success of the series. Next to solid ratings on BBC4, where the series was shown in the original Danish with English subtitles, the series also obtained extremely positive reviews and reports in newspapers such as "The Guardian", "The New York Times" and in the trade press. The DVD publication was the most successful launch of a TV series to date this year, and the sales figures surpassed such current releases as "Glee" and "The Simpsons". A remake of the series was recently produced for the cable broadcaster AMC in the U.S.

Two seasons of the series have already been aired on ZDF; the first season scored an average rating of 2.79 million viewers for a 15.1% market share. The second season was watched by an average of 2.9 million viewers for a market share of 14%. The third and last season of the DR-TV / ZDF / ZDF Enterprises coproduction is currently being developed. Shooting is scheduled to begin in Denmark in August.
