Formatted Documentary 16 & Pregnant & Reality Hits Punk’d and S.O.B Sell Around the World

MTV’s Latin-Flavoured Popland and One Bad Trip, and BET’s Born to Dance, Debut at MIPCOM

Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN), owned by Viacom Inc (NYSE: VIA, VIA.B), has broken into new territory with a number of ‘firsts’ for its highly successful Formats division in the run up to MIPCOM 2011. Agreements include adaptations of formatted documentary hit show 16 & Pregnant for Ukraine, along with Latin America’s first ever VIMN format deal through established reality show Punk’d. In addition, a first format deal for the UK has been signed with the highly successful production arm of STV in Scotland for hidden camera show S.O.B (Socially Offensive Behaviour). The news was announced today by Caroline Beaton, Senior Vice President, International Programme Sales, VIMN.

In Ukraine, filming has begun on 16 & Pregnant with the series set to be adapted, localised and ready for transmission on commercial television network STB in Spring 2012. The show maintains its original title and will follow the wide variety of challenges faced by a group of pregnant Ukrainian teenagers as they attempt to navigate the bumpy terrain of adolescence and growing pains, while simultaneously dealing with the changes and difficulties of expecting a baby.

MTV’s breakout hit, Punk’d, will debut as Latin America’s first MTV format deal. BTF Venture is set to produce a pilot episode of the television series featuring pranks on well-known celebrities for Mexico’s TV Azteca, with a view to producing a full series in 2012. The show will be hosted by popular Mexican television personality, Ines Gomez Mont, in the role made famous in the US by Ashton Kutcher. Finally, in a significant deal for the UK market, Scottish TV has picked up the format option of BET's hidden-camera title S.O.B. (Socially Offensive Behaviour). The comedy prank show tests the limits of political correctness for unsuspecting participants and lets the audience see what people really say when they are in the most extreme situations and their guard is down.

“This latest raft of significant deals covers new titles and relatively untapped territories for us from a formats perspective, such as Latin America and Eastern Europe, once again underlining the strength of our iconic content’s appeal to audiences around the world,” commented Beaton. “It’s wonderful for us to be able to come to market with fresh new programming embodied by our outstanding new scripted telenovela, Popland, which we are offering as a finished series and scripted format, as well as offering shows such as One Bad Trip which fit so well with buyers’ current wish-lists.”

VIMN will debut three new formats titles at MIPCOM. Drama format Popland is the second telenovela from MTV and the first fully-produced scripted series by MTV Latin America. Perfectly fitting the current trend for shows centred around kids and teens behaving badly comes MTV’s One Bad Trip which follows a group of teens on wild partying holidays, blissfully unaware that their parents or partners are secretly spying on their every move. Finally, competitive reality format from BET, Born to Dance gives aspiring dancers the chance to be mentored by a top choreographer and launch a successful career in the highly competitive world of professional dance.

A long time home of ground-breaking formats such as Pimp My Ride and Punk’d, VIMN’s format catalogue comprises more than x60 potential format hits from its vast content library. Programming available as formats includes MTV’s Real World, and Room 401, Nickelodeon’s Blue’s Clues and GUTS, Comedy Central’s Crank Yankers and The Joe Schmo Show from Spike.
