Hanabi is Game of the Year 2013

Game of the Year - July 2012

The word Hanabi comes from the Japanese language and means fire flower or fireworks. In this case, Hanabi stands for an unusual cooperative and communicative card game. Cards featuring pictures of fireworks have to be played in the exact order. The problem is: Players hold their cards back to front. Against the usual habit, they do not see their own cards but always see the cards of their fellow players. Players use hints like “These cards are blue” or “You have a three, it’s this card” and knowledge from previous rounds to decide which cards they keep, which cards they play, and which cards they discard. However, the number of hints is limited and after only three mistakes, you have lost. Who will be able to win most points and create the perfect fireworks?

Statement of the jury:
Hanabi impressed us with an unparalleled mixture of cooperative, communicative, and deductive elements. Holding your cards back to front is not only an unusual sight, but also promotes concentration and cooperation. It is fascinating to see how groups are more in tune with each other round after round, how they learn to draw better conclusions. And joy is great when they successfully create one of the legendary card fireworks.
