In a major initiative supported by the NSW Government, 250,000 primary school children across the state will participate in a month long program that is specifically designed to educate them, and the community, about one of the biggest problems in the western world. Obesity and diet related diseases are some of the major burdens on the Australian health system. The problem has become so alarming that 1 in 4 children in Australia are now considered overweight or obese.

Fruit&Veg Month will be held in schools from August 26th to September 20th. In an exciting first for nutrition health and education in Australia, organiser Healthy Kids Association has teamed up with the only global children's entertainment brand dedicated to children's health, LazyTown. The LazyTown television series, currently airing on ABC 4 Kids, stars its creator, Magnus Scheving as Sportacus, the athletic, super-active hero who leads by example to inspire the residents of LazyTown and its viewers to make healthy choices.

"Eating habits formed in childhood stay with us for the rest of our lives. Children are influenced everyday by their environment. We're privileged to have LazyTown's support to help spread our message. It is critical we educate our children about healthy food today, for the benefit of Australia tomorrow", says Healthy Kids Association CEO, Jo Gardner.

Activities during Fruit&Veg Month will include:
  • nutrition specific classroom activities;
  • eating and education gatherings for school communities, including families, teachers and all school staff;
  • individual, class and home based competitions incorporating healthy eating.
