Museum art and objects ancient and modern will grace memorable and unique range

The British Museum, the UK’s most popular visitor attraction, has awarded greeting cards publisher Portfolio a global licence to produce a range of British Museum greeting cards illustrated with designs drawn from the Museum’s vast collection of art and artefacts.

The range will draw inspiration from a wide selection of works — from ancient to contemporary and from fine art to sculpture — and from countries that span the globe.

The initial range will be made up of 24 designs. Each image will be expertly reproduced and printed in a 145mm x 170mm format.

The range launches at UK retail in February 2017, when it will also be displayed for UK and international visitors at Spring Fair, the UK’s definitive destination for the home and gift industry, taking place from 5-9 February at Birmingham’s NEC.

Notting Hill-based Portfolio has been publishing greeting cards for nearly 40 years. It began by specialising in black and white photographic cards, and went on to produce a variety of ranges, including calligraphic, illustrative and fine art. All of Portfolio’s greeting card production is done in the UK.

Portfolio’s card range is the latest addition to the successful British Museum Licensing programme. Launched in 2016, the programme provides a wealth of exciting opportunities for licensees in many categories. Specialist brand agency TSBA Group has been appointed to build a global licensing campaign on behalf of the British Museum. Licensee announcements relating to a number of categories, including stationery, greeting cards, rugs, mobile phone covers, accessories and more are planned or imminent.

David Corner, Director, Portfolio Ltd, says: “With its access to some of the most beautiful, historic and striking art and artefacts anywhere in the world, the British Museum collections are a perfect source of memorable images. We are thrilled to be working with such a prestigious name — and a famous central London neighbour — on this unique range of greeting cards.”

Craig Bendle, Manager of Merchandise Licensing, British Museum, says: “This superb selection from a respected name in the field brings a world of history from across the centuries to a worldwide audience. Portfolio has done a wonderful job of bringing some of the Museum’s best-loved objects to a superb range of greeting cards.”
