Shadow Master: Who is able to see through the shadows?

Piatnik - December 2016

Playing with shadows has always been fascinating and inspiring people’s imagination. Many creative games have been invented: Just think of shadow puppetry or shadow dance! The new board game Schattenmeister (Shadow Master) by Piatnik equally relies on the fascination of lights and shadows, on fantasy and imagination.

Shadows are mysterious and fuel people’s imagination. Silhouettes in painting, optics, or photography hold a great fascination for their observers. Games designer Wolfgang Warsch “toys” with this fascination. Schattenmeister introduces a unique new way to play with lights and shadows. Interpreting a single silhouette is relatively easy. But what if the silhouettes of several objects blend together? That’s what Schattenmeister is about: Mysterious black shapes are waiting to be untangled and decoded. A tricky task, that even children aged 8+ might want to tackle.

Three to six players may accept this challenge. 42 shadow cards feed your fantasy and imagination. At first sight the cards seem to feature just an undefinable black blotch. But at second sight you will distinguish individual details. What might that be? The ear of a teddy bear? Or is the round shape in fact an apple? Those who want to become shadow masters need a keen eye and lots of fantasy and imagination.

You have to identify as many shadows as possible as quickly as possible. At first, each player operates behind a screen, unobserved by their fellow players: On their card they mark all images they recognize. The end of each round is crowned by the eagerly awaited solution: Turn the shadow card round and reveal the objects behind the shadows. Who will win? Who will earn the title “Shadow Master”? For each object that you guessed correctly, you gain a point and move your pawn one field forward on the board, one field towards victory.

You will never get bored with Schattenmeister. Wolfgang Warsch has guaranteed fun by one simple rule: There is no playing order; you do not have to wait until it is your turn. The next round begins immediately and only one question hangs in the air: What is hiding in the shadows?

The designer: Wolfgang Warsch was born and raised in Lower Austria and studied genetics and microbiology in Vienna. Today he and his family live in Cambridge. In addition to designing games, he does leukaemia research at the university.
