One world, one Monopoly

Hasbro - August 2008

More than 5.6 million votes determined the layout of the new Monopoly World Edition. Germany’s major cities will not be on board
Guinness world record attempt on 27 August 2008

Germany is World Gaming Champion. In no other country around the world people do so many board games as in Germany. Nonetheless, Germany did not take their chance in the global online competition Monopoly manufacturer Parker initiated at the beginning of this year: Now the result of the six-week internet vote for the first-ever Monopoly World edition game board has entered the shelves of toy retailers throughout 45 countries worldwide. Originally, 70 international cities had been nominated for global vote at www.monopoly.com. 22 cities have been elected to appear on the new Monopoly board. Results are disappointing – from the German point of view. None of their national candidates Frankfurt, Munich and Berlin made it onto the board of the Monopoly World edition that is officially launched on 27 August. The absolute winner, Canadian Montreal now claims the top spot of the famous Mayfair. Second best in the race for Monopoly’s real estates – and thus the new master of the “Park Lane” – is Latvia’s capital Riga. All three German cities have been actively supported, but a middle ranking was not enough to earn a spot on board. Small comfort: Other renowned metropolises like Madrid, Moscow, Chicago or Buenos Aires share the German fate.

Globalized Monopoly

Updated money transfer
Electronic banking unit with “Deal Button”
Irrespective of the election outcome, the newly published Monopoly World edition comes with numerous updates and special features: Each Monopoly game has its individual mix of different tokens. From the German “Pretzel” to the world-famous Eiffel Tower through to the Australian “Boomerang” – tokens reflect icons and styles from all seven continents. Designers have created a total of 24 different figures and every package includes six tokens. Which combination you get, depends on your collector’s luck. Also new: The traditional money has been replaced by bank costumer cards and an electronic banking unit that not only processes cashless payment transactions. The integrated “Deal Button” now ensures that vacant estates are quickly sold by auction thus catering for faster play and shorter playing time. Board design is dominated by globalization, too: The images of numerous international landmarks on boards and packages make every game a playful journey around the world.

The world edition sets a new milestone in Monopoly history

For more than 70 years now the dealing of fees, funds and force has been inspiring game fans all over the world. Today, Monopoly is sold in more than 103 countries and 37 languages. In Germany alone more than 750,000 copies have been sold in 2007 – worldwide more than 260 million games since their market launch in 1935. Although global enthusiasm is consistent, the game boards are not. On the basis of the “original Monopoly” by Charles Darrow almost every country has their own national edition with their own famous avenues and high streets.

After more than 200 different editions and variations Monopoly now sets a new milestone in their own history. For the first time they publish an edition that – democratically elected – represents the whole world on one board: Monopoly World.

The whole world passes GO!

A Guinness world record attempt of a very special kind: Never before have so many people worldwide played Monopoly at the same time.

27 August 2008 7.00 a.m. Las Vegas, 10.00 a.m. Toronto, 3.00 p.m. London, 0.00 a.m. Brisbane, 4.00 p.m. Frankfurt a. M. Today thousands of Monopoly fans in 20 metropolises around the globe will play the popular family board game and try to set a totally new world record: On 27 August at 2:00 p.m. (Greenwich Mean Time) most people ever will be playing Monopoly at the same time. The world record attempt has been officially announced for “Guinness World Records” and will be strictly observed by publisher’s administrators at local venues. For Germany the exclusive venue will be the moneymaking metropolis Frankfurt/Main. According to the famous Monopoly motto “…go straight to jail” German friends of the popular board game will meet and play at a very special place: “Das alte Polizeigewahrsam Klapperfeldstraße” – Frankfurt’s oldest preserved prison that looks exactly as it had back in 1887 will serve as one-of-a-kind venue for the German monopolists’ contribution to the world record bid. The enclosure of the authentic old court prison provides space for up to 300 players who will certainly be happy to be “…just visiting”. Only one hour later at around 5.00 p.m. the Monopoly fun will be all over – at least for the worldwide Guinness evaluation of the hour-long attempt that spans the globe.
