On the 2009 International Toy Fair in Nuremberg Winning Moves presented the latest addition to their Cartagena brand: Cartagena – Die Meuterei (Cartagena – Mutiny). In the fourth independent game on the pirates from Cartagena author Michael Rieneck invites 2 to 4 players to take sides: with Captain Valverde or the mutineer Ramon Diaz. By the use of Attitude Cards players try and help their leader triumph in the end. But then, it may well be the gold they loot on their journey that finally tips the scales.

Michael Rieneck, winner of the coveted 2007 Deutscher Spielepreis, atmospherically continues the successful story around the pirates from Cartagena. After their Flight from the Fortress, their Return to Pirate’s Nest and their booty quest to legendary Gold Island now unrest spreads among the crew – and Mutiny breaks out! Rieneck makes sure that the new addition to the Cartegena family continues the classic tradition of cards deciding on the play mechanisms of a board game. With tactic skills, close observation of opponents and cunning use of cards players move their pieces, take sides and make their decisions. Cartagena – Die Meuterei is an exciting game for the whole family or an entertaining games evening with friends.

The game features two different phases: the journey and the mutiny. Players find themselves on the pirate’s ship, setting sails and leaving Gold Island behind. On their journey they visit different buccaneers in their cabins. These pirates (13 Pirate Cards) provide valuable Information, Fighting Cards or Gold – everything to be well-prepared for the upcoming mutiny. On their journey players have to use their Attitude Cards to decide which side they will fight on, when helmsman Ramon Diaz challenges Captain Valverde in the end.

Players may influence the outcome of the final mutiny by collecting Fighting Cards, Gold Coins and Gold Cards and by strategically positioning their sailors on deck. During the actual mutiny sailors will challenge each other in duels. Each sailor features their own strength and may be supported by playing Fighting Cards. The game is over, when one party wins three or more duels. Now players turn over their cards and reveal their attitude. The player who took sides with the winning party AND was able to collect most of the gold wins!

“Our Cartagena series consists of several independent games that share the background story and fate of the pirates that escaped from Cartagena,” said Michel M. Matschoss, Manager, Winning Moves. “Cartagena – Die Meuterei follows our concept of ‘Gaming Fun in Squares’: easy-to-understand rules, a game length of less than 45 minutes, high product quality, tactical ingenuity and pure fun at reasonable prices.”

Michael Rieneck was born in 1966 and lives in Kiel, Germany. He has been responsible for several game adoptions of successful novels, has been nominated for the “2005 Spiel des Jahres” award as best game designer and won the coveted 2007 Deutscher Spielepreis.
