The Interviews webpage offers teachers the opportunity to submit a question that will be answered in an exclusive online Q&A with the famed author and artist. Eric Carle will answer a select number of questions each week through the month of January. Designed to enrich The Very Hungry Caterpillar™ experience in the classroom, the new website offers a menu of teacher resources including: lesson plans, craft ideas, bulletin board display ideas, a teachers’ gallery, and interactive interviews with the renowned author. The Lesson Plans webpage offers a variety of content for classrooms in language arts, math, science, character education, and social studies. Teachers can download reproducible worksheets for handwriting practice; student incentives including bookmarks, certificates and badge patterns; and the always popular coloring sheets that let students color the stages of The Very Hungry Caterpillar™. The social studies lesson plan covers the study of geography through monarch butterfly migration patterns and includes The Very Hungry Caterpillar™ Visits the US and the World, a printable project designed for travel to classrooms throughout the US and the world. Students can send the Caterpillar along with photos and a questionnaire to classrooms around the world. After its visit, The Very Hungry Caterpillar™ will return to the sender’s classroom with photos and other interesting facts about what it experienced during its visit including local climate, what types of butterflies exist in that area, and the distance travelled. The Craft Ideas webpage brings students into the Eric Carle studio with a step-by-step photographic tutorial on how to prepare painted tissue papers and create collages just like Carle’s world famous designs. The webpage also includes classroom craft activities that encourage children to express their creativity as they respond to the story. The Bulletin Board Display Ideas webpage guides teachers in preparing creative interactive teaching and learning displays designed to help children learn colors and numbers, sequencing, counting and patterning, and the life cycle of a butterfly. Teachers can submit their own ideas to the Gallery page to inspire others and see what other teachers are doing.
