Telescreen - MIPTV Preview - 2010

m4e - February 2010

Telescreen B.V., a leading production, distribution and brand management company and part of the German m4e Group, will be presenting several new properties at MIPTV:

RUDOLF
Among them the new animated series RUDOLF about a door-to-door salesman and his hilarious day-to-day adventures. In total, 52 episodes of 3 minutes each are produced, the first 26 episodes are completed and ready for delivery. The second 26 episodes will be completed by the end of summer 2010. RUDOLF is produced by German JEP Animation with the support of the MEDIA Programme of the European Union. The series is created and directed by Rudi Mertens and produced by Jürgen Egenolf and will be entirely in ‘Gibberish’ with music and sound effects, so no dubbing is needed. The series’ accent is firmly on the visual.

Telescreen holds worldwide broadcasting, home entertainment, merchandising, internet, mobile phone, audio and book publishing rights (excl. Germany, French speaking Europe and Denmark).

RUDOLF is a sharp, uproarious animation series about a door-to-door salesman who meets the weirdest customers in the wildest neighbourhoods day-to-day. RUDOLF is such a zealot that he is blind to the fact that he is offering the wrong item to the wrong customer. So wherever RUDOLF knocks, he is in for a shock. Each encounter escalates into slapstick mayhem but RUDOLF remains undeterred. He might be an eternal loser, but whenever he fails, he picks himself up, dusts himself down, flashes his salesman’s smile and starts all over again. The series is fast furious fun for everyone aged 0 -99.

MIFFY
2010 marks the 55th anniversary of Dick Bruna’s timeless character MIFFY, whose worldwide copyrights are protected by the Dutch Mercis bv. Being a classic storybook character, global pre-school brand, international design icon and successful licensing property, MIFFY is ready for the future. Besides several international events and promotions that are planned for this year, Telescreen is producing a 70-minute feature film. This stop-motion cinema experience for 3-6 year olds (and the whole family) is expected for delivery in November 2011 and will combine all of the hallmarks that have already been proven to work on TV for the latest 3D series “Miffy” (78 x 5’) and for successful specials such as “Family Celebrations” (4 x 24’) and “Explore the World with Miffy” (4 x 11’).

MIFFY made her TV debut in 1992, appearing in 82 episodes of each 5 minutes in 2D animation. Later the 3D animated series was produced. Currently both series are broadcasted in over 70 territories and are available on DVD as well.

Of the more than 120 original book titles of the little rabbit, more than 85 mio. were sold in nearly 50 different languages and a broad range of merchandising products is available, ranging from baby, apparel to toys and gifts. On top of that, MIFFY is involved in several charity projects. Telescreen Film Productions, a division of Telescreen B.V., is co-producing the movie with Dutch public broadcaster KRO at a budget of € 3.2 mio., and with the development support of the MEDIA programme of the European Union and the Dutch Film Fund.

The executive studio will be A.Film Denmark, renown for its work on film productions such as “FernGully: The Last Rainforest” (1992), “Quest for Camelot” (1998) and “Asterix and the Vikings” (2005).

The movie, built around a game that children know and love – a treasure hunt – celebrates the joy of curiosity, the fun of working together and the adventure of friendship. It will feature all of the characteristics that made MIFFY a beloved international phenomenon: the proven successful 3D animation style, the primary colours, songs and music that are rhyming and sing-able for a young child, the same cast of familiar Dick Bruna characters, a simple storyline with as much recognizable situations and objects as possible, and a patient tone that emphasizes an almost idealized childhood – maybe the one we all wished for.

MOOMIN
This famous character celebrates its 65th anniversary this year. The Moomins were created by the writer and visual artist Tove Jansson and the first Moomin book was published in 1945. To honor this anniversary, Moomin Character and Bulls Press will arrange a jubilee year with a major Nordic drawing competition for children as the main event. Also, the series and the feature film have been re-mastered.

Other properties of Telescreen’s rich distribution portfolio that are presented at MIPTV Cannes include:
  • CONNI, production of the animated series, based on the renown and popular German children’s book character, has started.
  • TOAD RULES, which Telescreen is developing at the moment, together with Irish based Caboom and for which Telescreen is still seeking partners.
  • LIZZIE McGUIRE, which is still one of the most popular teenager sitcoms (65 x 22’) and sold to over 100 territorries worldwide.
