The new site has gone live at a time when there is more concern than ever regarding the issue of nutrition for children – a recent high-profile study by Leeds-based academics suggests that just 1% of packed lunches taken by primary school children meet the nutritional standards set for school meals, and that crisps, sweets and sugary drinks still lead the way over healthy options like fruit and vegetables. The packed lunches of 1300 youngsters were examined and revealed just one in five contained any vegetables or salad and when fruit was provided it often remained uneaten as the youngsters filled up on unhealthy sweet and savoury snacks.
Explains Alex Bloom, Commercial Director at Spearmark, "Healthier lifestyles and the continued battle for healthier packed lunches remain a key focal point with media, consumers and retailers alike. This, together with the success of our ‘What’s For Lunch?’ booklet, launched back in 2006, have compelled us, as leading manufacturers of children’s lunchware, to continue to promote healthier packed lunches and drive the UK one step closer to encouraging their children to eat more healthily”. |
